This Modern Age

Dr. Wendy Doniger on Gov. Sarah Palin

with 12 comments

I couldn’t help but call Dr. Doniger, of the University of Chicago, when I read her quote on Sarah Palin, “Her greatest hypocrisy is in her pretense that she is a woman.”  Amazingly, she took my call while she was on vacation at Cape Cod.

QUICK UPDATE: Suprisingly, Dr. Doniger gave $1,000 to John Kerry back in 2004.  I was expecting to see a connection to Obama.  Alas….  And nevermind that Unversity of Chicago students pay over $35,000 per year to be taught by people like this.  Does anyone have a guess how much tax payer money is sent to the University of Chicago?

Her basic complaint is that Sarah Palin wants to impose her theology on women and that, “[Palin] does not speak for women; she has no sympathy for the problems of other women, particularly working class women.”

Working class women…?  While Wendy Doniger spends her time in the Ivory Tower at the University of Chicago and vacations at Cape Cod while school is in session.  By contrast, Palin is actually a working class woman.  Remember she went back to work three days after following through on her ‘choice’ to have Trig.

My ultimate question for Dr. Doniger was, whether a woman should be defined by her behavior and political beliefs?  Cleverly, she answered that she wasn’t expert on Palin’s horomones and she doesn’t doubt that Palin does have a womb.  But she was clear that Palin wasn’t “acting like a woman.”

Ultimately, Dr. Doniger and her ilk, do want to define womanhood by how someone votes and their political beliefs.  This is the height of sexism.

UPDATE: A clever reader wrote on Dr. Doniger, “The left’s new position:  Being homosexual is genetic.  Being a woman is a choice.”  Ah, the brilliance of leftist nuance.

  1. Did she steal those glasses from Hilllary, circa 1981?

Seriously, though, why is it that “open-minded” liberals demand uniformity of thought? Governor Palin isn’t a liberal so she can’t be a real woman?

  2. School not in session here for a couple more weeks.

  3. GH –

Excellent point, but Wendy told me she would be there into November. Y’all start classes by then, don’t you?

  4. Not all professors teach classes every quarter and/or semester!

  5. Jayson –

That’s terrific that professors don’t teach all the time. I went to snotty school too – I get that.

But to have someone like Wendy critique Palin for not being in touch with “working women” while she vacations on the Cape, while at the same time Palin has a full-time job and her husband is VERY blue collar is pitiful.

But that is what the elite Left in this country have come to.

At the same time, the Left wonders why they can’t win elections and no one outside their elite circles likes them. Hmmm… that’s hard to figure out, isn’t it?

  6. What makes you think that while in Cape she’s vacationing? Did it ever occur to you that professors have other obligations? ie research, writing books?

Yes, it’s clear that you went to a snotty school!

  7. Jayson,

I’m assuming you attend the University of Chicago. If so, it’s obviously not the institution it used to be. Or perhaps you take Wendy’s classes and have lost your edge for critical thought.

Having multiple places to call home – Chicago and Cape Cod – and thinking that “work” includes the liberal activities of researching and writing books does not keeps one’s fingers on the pulse of “working women.”

One of the Left’s greatest flaws is it’s absolute inability for self critique. May you rise quickly through the ranks.

  8. Another reason for why India is going to be crushed by the three legged stool of terrorism, poverty, and rigid social beliefs…they definitely are not westerners and never will be.

  9. Hi, everyone. How’s it going? That’s good. Watch “Barton Fink” if you want a nice depiction of people like Doniger. They love to write about how noble the working class is but they actually hold them in contempt. It’s the old cliche: They love humanity but hate humans. Doniger fits the bill. Of course, if a professor at the University of Chicago said such venomous, one-sided things about Obama or Biden, she would probably be given her walking papers. It’s ridiculous that this woman still has a job, let alone the elevated one that she now holds.

  10. I’d like to apologize for my previous post. It was pretty sloppy. I’m just not good at writing quickly. I’m sorry.

It’s amazing to me that someone like Doniger can even exist. She’s spent years studying religion and she’s still so blind to her own prejudices. The most important thing one can do is know thyself. She has failed at that, which has grossly distorted everything that enters her filter. It’s almost laughable that someone can live in such ignorance of her own folly.

  11. Nice to see that other people have a problem with Wendy and her ‘oh so scholarly’ wisdom. I hope she will soon be invited to India to debate the veracity of the nonsense she spouts in her books on Hinduism. No scholar, this one.

  12. Why not try reading one of her forty books?

And by the way, the U of C is not supported by taxes.
